mirror painting

Posted by Nafisa on Mar 7, 2010 in DIY |

I received a gorgeous mirror last year from my mother in law. What I love about it is the frame work / border, except that it was gold & black and the general colour scheme in my house is silver & black.

So off I went to Builders Warehouse (I love the store!) to pick up some paint, brushes and turps. This was last year but I only got around to doing it this weekend.

Before:

After:

I initially wasn’t happy with the results because paint looks different after it dries. It also looked much better after the second coat.

Now that it’s complete, this is what I should have done differently:

> Used masking tape to make a border on the actual mirror (I didn’t have any, was too lazy to go out and buy some)
> Propped the mirror on a flat surface face up, instead of standing upright.

We live and learn.

After reading this article a few days ago, I decided that I really want to restore old furniture as a hobby. Although, I don’t exactly have old furniture lying around, but will see what I can scout around to upcycle.

Looks nice. I painted my room at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning! Busy doing a cheap up-grade/re-model as part of this months challenge :) You’ll hear/read about it soon enough :)

Google for Duplicolor, we stock it – a textured spray coating which gives a rough grainy type effect. might be nice to get a grungy gothy texture. – will hook you up a can when we return to za land.

Naeem – I just did, and looks very interesting. I like the grainy effect. Sweet, thanks :)

This is lovely!!!
I saw some inspiration over the weekend on these scoop chairs.
I just want to get back to SA and try them on my mum-in-law’s old chairs that nobody wants to use anymore.

I think that DIY Diva’s runs a short course on furniture restoration, but I’m not 100% sure.
You should look it up :)

Very cool this. We have an old chair that could do with some work. We’ll compare notes when I return.

Fatima – thanks! Would love to see what you do with it too.
I will find out some more info, thanks for the heads up :)

Saaleah – thank you. Hmmm sounds interesting. Curious to know what type of chair. Looking forward to it!

It’s a really boring piece; light wood, the seat and back rest upholstered in a beige fabric. It was in the tv room, easy to miss:) I want to stain the wood really dark and re-upholster it something wacky.
