2012: the year that was

Submitted by on 27/12/2012 – 10:136 Comments

2012In keeping up with what appears to be a blog tradition, I’ve done a recap of 2012.

This year has been different to any other year – I was retrenched. It’s very different when it happens to you, than when you hear about it happening to others. I’m just glad the worst is over.

Anyway, here goes:

1. What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before?
I signed-up for and completed the Nike Run Jozi (10km); appeared on the ZA Tech Show; had dinner in an open sky; assembled a PC from scratch; and tweeted from the sky when Mango launched South Africa’s first in-flight WiFi.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Not applicable to me; I don’t do the whole resolution thing.

3. How will you be spending New Year’s Eve?
Probably the same as every other year…indoors.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5. What countries did you visit?
None.

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
More stamps on my passport ;)

7. What date from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The 10th of November – saw one my favourite bands, Linkin Park, LIVE!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting published monthly in a leading women’s magazine.

Recently Updated

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not being able to run My Digital Life successfully.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing major.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My third-gen iPad (which is now obsolete, so does that count?)

12. Where did most of your money go?
Probably something car related. If it’s not my tyres, it’s replacing something or the other.

13. What song will always remind you of 2012?
Oppa…Gangnam Style. (Go on, help reach the next 2 billion!)

14. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Charity.

15. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Being lazy.

16. What was your favourite TV program?
Suits. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re missing out.

Suits

17. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
No.

18. What was the best book you read?
Ask me later.

19. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I can’t believe it took me this long, but Florence + The Machine.

20. What was your favourite film of this year?
The Dark Knight Rises.

21. What did you do on your birthday?
It fell on Easter Friday, so it was a weekend full of celebrations.

22. What kept you sane?
Streaming music on Simfy.

23. Who did you miss?
Friends I lost touch with.

24. Who was the best new person you met?
I don’t like singling out an individual. I met a lot of new people from extended circles.

25. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:
Not exactly new, but not to take anything for granted.

    1. What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before?

I did the Radio 702 “Walk the Talk” fun run/walk. I walked 15kms in just over 3 hours and hurt the hell out of my feet.

    2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Can’t remember any I made, but probably not. And no, new year resolutions are dumb.

    3. How will you be spending New Year’s Eve?

At home, far, far, far from the madding crowd, enjoying some Amarula or Cape Velvet on ice, toasting the new year at midnight and then going to bed.

    4. Did anyone close to you die?

Not close to me, but someone I know died.

    5. What countries did you visit?

I didn’t leave SA at all. Not even once.

    6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in
    2012?

    A new car.

    7. What date from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

January 26. My girlfriend’s brother died.

    8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

I completed the Radio 702 Walk the Talk despite being in considerable agony for the last third of the event.

    9. What was your biggest failure?

Not speaking my mind more often.

    10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

    Not this year.

    11. What was the best thing you bought?

So many to choose from! I think my 5.1 surround setup has to be #1.

    12. Where did most of your money go?

My car. Gearbox replacements aren’t cheap.

    13. What song will always remind you of 2012?

Gangnam Style, Some Nights by Fun.

    14. What do you wish you’d done more of?

    last year?

    Nope.

    18. What was the best book you read?

    Stephen King’s 22.11.63

    19. What was your greatest musical discovery?

    Ludivico Einaudi.

    20. What was your favourite film of this year?

The Avengers. Damn that movie owned.

    21. What did you do on your birthday?

Worked, then went to dinner with friends.

    22. What kept you sane?

    Games.

    23. Who did you miss?

My best friend from Durban who I only saw around the time my girlfriend’s brother died, and a very special person who lives in Canada and with whom I have not spoken much of late. I miss riveting, involving, deep conversation. Haven’t had much of that this year.

    24. Who was the best new person you met?

Don’t think I met any new people in 2012 that I could categorise as “best”.

    25. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:

I presume you mean 2012. In that case: Caring about what other people think is only slightly less retarded than hitting yourself in the face with a mallet. Oh, wait, I’ve always known that.

Thanks for sharing, Deon! I didn’t know you did Walk the Talk. Haven’t braved myself for that one yet.

  • Azra

Like I told Aasia, Gabriel Macht in Suits *swoon*. Best of 2013 to you and yours :)

And he can get away with wearing a suit every single day of the year! He is my favourite.
Thanks Azra. And to you :-)

First, I’m going to steal this. Much better than a “my best products/places” of 2012 post I was agonising over.
Second, you need to change your answer to number nine. You didn’t fail. You did what you could; the fact that the division failed is not your fault. Don’t see it as a personal failure because it’s not. You’ve done brilliantly since, and maybe you needed the change of scenery. In no way does that make you or your efforts a failure.
    ;)

I know I shouldn’t see it as a personal failure, but I still feel partly responsible.
But, thank you, and agree about the change of scenery :)

Great, I’ll look out for yours!
