fitbit-devicesThe Fitbit range of wireless activity tracking devices are now available in South Africa.

You can track your distance, steps and calories with these devices. The range varies, starting at beginner/fun level, and going up to a serious/mid and upper range that tracks your sleeping patterns.

The Fitbit range consists of the Zip, One, Flex and a WiFi scale, the Aria, all available through iStores nationwide. All trackers wirelessly sync to your Fitbit account (accessible via the web, or smartphone app – iOS and Android), supports handsets with Bluetooth 4.0, has a social aspect in that it lets you challenge friends, earn badges, set goals and additionally, log your meals. If you’re a Discovery Vitality member, Fitbit is supported fully and you can earn Vitality points by linking your accounts. So you earn points by doing what you do everyday – walking.

You can view you account via the web or app, and all your results are displayed in graphs, which is completely customisable. You can drag and drop and change the layout to suit yourself.

FITBIT ZIP – R899 fitbit-zipMore than just a pedometer; for beginners who want to track their everyday patterns like steps taken, distance covered and calories burned. The device is really tiny, and can be kept in your pocket or clipped on your bra; it’s very discreet and nobody has to know you’re tracking your activities.

fitbit-oneThis tracker helps you eat smart and sleep well, in addition to tracking your activity. It tracks your steps, distance, calories burned; and at night it measures your sleep cycle with option to wake you up in the morning, without interrupting your partners’ sleep. This tracker can be worn as a belt clip, or clipped anywhere else, hidden underneath your clothes.

fitbit-flexThis slim and stylish device does the same as the the One; it tracks your steps, distance, calories burned as well as monitor your sleep patterns. The difference is that you can wear it on your wrist (like a Nike Fuel Band) with more options, and can be worn in the shower. It also wakes you up and not your partner (by vibration), has LED lights to show your progress, with interchangeable colour bands.

This WiFi smart scale tracks your weight, body fat percentage, and body mass index (BMI)*. Each time you step on the scale, your weight is synced to your Fitbit account. It supports syncing for up to 8 member accounts in a household.

*Personally, I don’t agree with the body mass index system of measurement. Example a rugby team would be obese by these measurements, and when I used it a few years back, apparently I wasn’t healthy because of my height. I’m quite tall and needed to be about 10kgs heavier to be considered “healthy”.

Is the fitbit water proof? Most of my exercise is done in the swimming pool. How does it manages swimming?

    • Nafisa Akabor 05/09/2013 at 22:14 Reply

Hi Jane. It’s not waterproof therefore cannot be used for swimming. It’s only water-resistant and can be used when washing dishes, or if you’re caught in the rain.

Hi. How does it compare to the Nike+ kit?

    • Nafisa Akabor 17/09/2013 at 23:00 Reply

Hi. I’ve heard that the Nike+ fuel band lacks some key features that competitors have, haven’t used it myself. It’s quite expensive too, comparatively.
I am a fan of the Nike+ Running app though. One of the best.

Hi Elna. You will have to log into your Discovery profile for more info. I’m no longer with Discovery so can’t show you where to go. If you are having trouble, call the Discovery call centre. Thanks.
