Lego has entered the interactive digital world with the launch of its new Hidden Side sets that goes on sale globally today, including South Africa. I got a sneak peak at the sets last night at the Lego Certified Store in Sandton City.
The new Hidden Side collection is about solving mysteries that are haunting the town of Newbury, complete with smartphone integration. The new collection works with an app available on iOS and Android (tablets and smartphones) that brings an element of augmented reality, a first for Lego. The collection is for kids aged 7 years and up and features a set of eight haunted building sets, like a haunted lab, paranormal bus, and haunted high school (that turns into a monster).
Once you download the free app – we’re told it’s a large app that’s over 1GB – you scan the set, and choose to either catch ghosts or be a ghost. It’s filled with solving mysteries, playing mini games, and catching ghosts if you choose that option, and progress between the various stages. The app has games independent of building the Lego sets. You can view the entire Hidden Set collection here: https://greatyellowbrick.co.za/collections/lego-hidden-side. Prices start from R359 up to R1449.
You can also find the new Lego Harley-Davidson Fat Boy in stores, featuring a curvy design, with an engine with moving pistons, dual exhaust pipes, handlebar steering, moveable gearshift pedal and brake levers, and kickstand.
The Technic collection also now works with a smartphone for the first time.
Also new to Lego Certified Stores are the Creator sets that are community driven. Anyone can contribute their designs and from what I understand, you can vote for it and it gets selected via creator.lego.com. You can now purchase the Ideas Tree House, for ages 16 and up though!
If you want to buy anything from the Lego Store, it’s double points day today – 1 August, at the Sandton City and Menlyn stores, or online at https://greatyellowbrick.co.za
