The inaugural App of the Year awards, sponsored by MTN Business, took place at The Venue in Melrose Arch last night.

I think its about time we have our very own award ceremony to showcase local talent. Apps have become integrated into our daily lives, and let’s face it, when choosing a tablet, it’s all about the apps.

Some interesting and related stats from eMarketing Trends: 57% of South Africans access the web via their mobile phone and a user spends 9% more time using mobile apps than using the Internet. It’s also no surprise that games and social networks amount to 79% of a users total app usage.

The four main judges for the evening were: Kojo Baffoe (Destiny Man), Toby Shapshak (Stuff Magazine), Melissa Attree (Cerebra) and Jonathan Hoehler (Starfish Mobile); as well as each member of the audience, who voted live via a keypad. (Apologies for the not-so-great-quality pics).

Awards spanned across Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows Phone and HTML5 platforms, and additionally, most innovative app; best garage developer and of course, app of the year.

The winners for the evening were as follows:

FNB Banking for the Best iOS Consumer App
Health ID for the Best iOS Enterprise App
FNB Banking for the Best Blackberry App
TransUnion Dealer Guide for the Best Android Enterprise App
FNB Banking for the Best Android Consumer App
Rapidtargets for the Best HTML5 App
Matchy for the Best Windows App
Plascon Inspire Me for the Most Innovative App
PhraZApp for the Best Garage Developer App

The App of the Year award went to the very deserving (you have to admit) FNB. Just look at the size of their team; they obviously don’t cut corners:

One member of the FNB team will get to attend Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next year, and as our MC for the evening, Nik Rabinowitz pointed out:

Even MTN emerged as a winner last night, for longest hashtag for an event (ever): #MTNAppoftheYearAwards2012
