I know this edition is a week late, unfortunately I was off sick for most of last week. I returned from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona recently where AI was a hot topic. You may have seen Honor’s new Magic6 Pro smartphone that has AI eye-tracking features for the notification screen. I was offered a unique opportunity to test Honor’s new tech by controlling a car with my eyes! I’ve written about it on Forbes Africa, make a TikTok, and spoke to Marcelle Gordon on ENCA about it along with my highlights at MWC, if you want to catch up in a way that suits you.
Oh, and guess what, Honor’s Magic Series will be launching in South Africa soon. It includes the V2 tablet that is 4.7mm thin - world’s thinnest foldable - and the Magic6 Pro smartphone with the AI eye-tracking features mentioned above.
While I was in Spain, I tested a new travel eSIM called Voye, made by a South African company ExecMobile. I found the set-up and installation super simple; you also get 100MB free with all bundles to test in SA to make sure it is working - smart. I will share a write up on Recharged soon, but for those interested, you can get a 3GB package valid for 7 days for $12, which works in 130 countries. For a limited number of users, you can sign up and use my referral code “SBATIIS” for 3 Voye credits.
I’m excited to announce a new writer on Recharged, Sanobar Khan, who will tackle parenting with a tech angle. Sanobar is a broadcasting professional, yoga instructor and most passionately, a mum to a three-year-old. She aims to explore the digital landscape as a positive part of parenting and aims to help you steer clear of the potential pitfalls of technology. Her first post, Tech Travel with a Toddler can be found here: https://www.recharged.co.za/tech-travel-toddler-apple-airtag/
Prior to jetting off to Barcelona for MWC, I attended the launch of the Honda Elevate in Cape Town. It’s a small crossover SUV, with pricing starting at R369 900. I was impressed with this SUV, and think it’s an ideal starter car or for young families. You can read up more here.
And speaking about cars, the Volvo EX30 electric car has finally launched in SA, you know the one that can go from 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds? It’s got a minimalist interior with one large touch screen, which houses the controls for everything! Looking forward to real world usage, hopefully soon.
Till next week,
Nafisa
