I usually do a bunch of research before I purchase any tech item. The usual: read a bunch of reviews, watch videos, and find South African relevant info to make informed decisions. However, when it came to finding a solution for my wardrobe, I made a spur of the moment purchase but paid attention to average ratings. I have floor-to-ceiling doors, so when open, the light gets blocked. I wanted a quick fix: wireless lighting.
I looked locally last year, but they were pricey, so I opted for rechargeable wireless LED motion sensor lights from Shein. They have loads of options; I took the 40cm ones based on my cupboard size. It comes with magnetic holders with two-way tape, you just remove it to recharge. I paid R132 each and took four just to test; with shipping it was R697. It cost about R78 in customs, which roughly worked out to R194 each in total. This is the exact listing for the item.

If you want to purchase them, here’s what you should know. Out of the four items received, two were different. Two came with USB-C ports with lights that have three colour options and the motion sensor is for night or day, whereas the other two are micro-USB, with one light colour (white, and not yellow; I chose this), and the buttons toggled to on/off/auto for the motion sensor. Not necessarily a bad thing, just inconsistent considering it was the same listing/SKU. I would’ve preferred all USB-C, but it’s perfect for what I need. If I’m opening my cupboards twice a day at most, the battery will last longer than if you use it in the kitchen. I’m happy with the purchase and plan to get more. Consider this my tip for this edition of Tech Things, which happens to be load-shedding friendly.
I’m currently testing a new gadget that I’ve not used before: a smart ring. It’s the NexRing, and costs about R4000. It tracks sleep, temperature, workouts, steps, calories etc. It’s for those who want something discreet instead of a smartwatch, which can be bulky. It’s available in black, silver and rose gold. Is there anything you want to know about it? Leave me a comment and stay tuned for my review.
