Building a smart home is a constant work in progress. It is also one of the most popular topics I get asked about, including advice on where to begin or what brand of product to buy. Based on tests and products purchased over the years, today I’m sharing a quick top 5 products to include in your smart home starter kit.
They are: a smart speaker as your base; WiFi light switches instead of smart light bulbs which are costly over time; internet connected security cameras tied to a smartphone app; robot vacuum cleaners that you can schedule; and motion sensors to trigger lights. I get into more detail about each product, including what I use in my home in my new Top 5: Smart Home Starter Kit post.
Speaking about robovacs, I’m giving one away on my Instagram account where I touch more on the brand new Hobot Legee D8 and Lulu cleaning station, plus I answer commonly asked questions about these gadgets on my Reel. Find it here.
When smart home tech is not keeping me busy, I love testing new tech that I can use on my travels. One of my most popular posts has been about data eSIM provider Airalo, who I’ve been using for more than a year. It recently introduced a new package that comes with a number that now supports calls, texts and data. I cannot wait to try it on my upcoming travels. All the details here plus get $3 off your first Airalo purchase with my discount code in the post.
I also tested the Dyson Corrale cordless hair straightener with a built-in battery that provides up to 30 minutes of style time, suited for travel and load shedding. I was brave enough to take it without the charger on my recent business trips abroad. If you are considering buying one for yourself or your partner, I recommend reading my review before you fork out the R9 999. Check it out here.
If you’re team Android, check out Tecno’s new wearables and accessories it recently introduced to South Africa, with prices between R399-R1 499. Also, what are team Android using to track luggage in the absence of Samsung Smart Tags, which don’t seem to be available anywhere? Let me know.

Till next time,
