Exciting news this week is even more eSIM support, this time from MTN for prepaid customers. You may recall, it introduced eSIM for contract subscribers in 2019. This comes two months after Vodacom introduced prepaid support. I have to wonder if Apple is calling the shots here, because the iPhone 14 range sold in the US in 2022 were eSIM-only variants, i.e. no physical SIM slots. Will Apple make another bold decision this year, and get rid of physical SIM slots entirely? The September iPhone unveiling couldn't come fast enough.
If you want to test an eSIM for free, I can confirm the Telkom branch in Sandton City has stock as of a few days ago. Just show up with your RICA documents to get it. If you’re a business owner or want to separate your personal and business line, it’s a great option. I posted a TikTok about it: https://www.tiktok.com/@nafisaakabor
Speaking of eSIM, my Honor 90 review is finally out. It is an Android option around the 15k mark, so something to consider if you’re looking to upgrade as most other eSIM phones on Android near the R20k upwards range. I put Honor’s claims to the test, and it’s worth a read, especially if you miss Huawei when it had GMS. I share where I think it shines and what it sacrificed. Read my review here.
I attended a TikTok workshop recently, which got me excited about the platform again as I revived my account a couple of months ago. You can catch the highlights here. It includes tips to keep kids safe, how to get the most out of it for your business or as a creator, and a bit of myth busting.
I’m excited to be a part of the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards judging panel again, regarded as ‘integral to the decision-making for new-car buyers in SA’. It has made a comeback since Covid interruptions with a slight refresh. There are 13 categories that will be judged; get the update here. Are you in the market for a new car or EV? What are you considering?
I’ve got a busy couple of months, stayed tuned for exciting announcements and adventures that allow me to test more travel tech.
Till next time,
