Tech21’s-Impact-BandTech21 cases for iPhones, iPads and MacBooks have made their way to South Africa and is exclusively available through the iStore.

What makes Tech21 cases unique is the impact protection integrated into these cases, which have great design too. The cases have D3O inside them, which is an orange impact protection material visible through the clear cases.

The way they describe the D3O substance is: “in everyday use, the molecules flow freely, but upon shock or impact they lock together, absorbing the impact force and spreading the shock evenly across the surface of the material.” D3O Impact Material is also used by the military (impact protection on the battlefield), and for sportswear.

I visited the iStore HQ about two weeks ago for a demo on this very substance (unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to take it home to play with). It’s bright orange and works exactly as described above.

To test it, we were given Thor’s hammer (yes, that’s what was written on the hammer in the logo above) with the D3O substance, which I chose to wrap around my finger and get straight to it. I may have had a little too much fun:

As you can see, that is essentially how your phone/tablet/laptop is protected by the D3O substance upon impact. Tech21 says its intelligent impact protection cases features:

– a selection of ingenious raw materials that provide optimum impact protection
– minimalist look and feel, with access to all handset functions
– revolutionary design

I quite like the minimalistic look of the cases. I’m using a clear one at the moment, with the orange D3O substance clearly visible on the edges. It doesn’t add a lot of bulk to the handset but protects it all round. The back has a mesh like design, which is also clear. It is also available in gray, but I prefer the clear one as it matches my white handset better.

I have been asked to drop my phone as a demonstration, which I’ve chosen NOT to do. I do not recommend buying the case and doing a drop test either.
