Emoji South Africa arrived on the scene last year with 14 different emoji pillows. They’ve since grown to manufacture more than double that, all done in Johannesburg. While the concept isn’t new, and you may have seen emoji pillows on sale in the US or Europe, Emoji SA have decided to do it themselves here. They’ve come up with up to 40 different designs ranging from ‘tears of joy’, monkey faces, tongue sticking out, and even up to four different types of the ‘poo’ emoji.
Mitchell Weinstein, owner of Emoji South Africa (you can find them on Facebook), says everything from production to manufacturing of the pillows are done in Johannesburg, using high quality materials that are machine washable. I can tell you with certainty that these are more ‘pillow’ than ‘cushion’, based on how heavy and solid they feel, which is also very soft.
Emoji South Africa doesn’t have a stand-alone store, but have been at these four malls since last year: Sandton City, Cresta, Bedford Centre, and Rosebank Mall as a pop-up. Pillows are R200 each, but if you purchase two, you get a minor discount of R20; so R380 for two; and then R550 for three pillows. Any additional pillows after that is R150 each.
I have six pillows to give away, three sets of two: tears of joy and the kissing face emoji to giveaway to three lucky readers. More on that below.
Mitchell says they are busy working on an online store, so if you’re not in Johannesburg, you should be able to get your hands on them when it goes live, or maybe win some on Wired to the Web!
The good news for anyone based in Johannesburg, as of today, 15 March, Emoji SA are back at the malls, selling new emoji pillows, in time for Easter. You can look out for the Easter bunny, the dog with tongue out, ghost, and many different poo emojis.
This is where you can find them from today, up until 4 April:
– Sandton City (opposite the iStore)
– Cresta (next to Zara)
– Bedford Centre (by the Pick n Pay court)
– Rosebank Mall (outside Typo, from 22 March)
In order for you to win one of three sets of emoji pillows consisting of tears of joy (the one I’m holding, up in the pic, and a kissing face emoji), just share a pic of yourself making any emoji face! If you want inspiration, take a look at this real life emojis video:
